CROSS FILE: Inquisition of the Vindicators

SUBJECT:  Recon Division THOUGHT:  Terror is a weapon.  Master it.

Lord, the following was compiled by one of my spies planted within the Vindicators Fortress Monastery.  Using his abilities, he has successfully passed himself off as a serf, and is slowly gaining access to many sacred areas and secured files.

--------------

My Lord Ryjak, I have uncovered some of the Vindicator's battle doctrine and religious practice.  It appears to me that each company is organized as a separate entity, maintaining its own unique recruitment, indoctrination, and religion.  Despite the fact that this conflicts with the Codex Astartes, it is effective in allowing the Vindicators to police this whole sector.  Apparently, the only thing that unites these Battle Companies into a unified chapter are a few sacred religious practices they all follow.  One of them is referred to as the Gathering of Remembrance, and another is their Campaign of Unity.
Apparently, every year a planet is chosen for this campaign, and all Companies contribute initiates to the battle.  All of the Initiates are given the Mark XII Recon Armor, and a limited choice of equipment and supplies.  The final test of the Initiates is to fight a guerilla war against the Enemies of Man, with no support from the rest of the Chapter.  They are thus stranded for three months, with no leadership or support.  They have only one objective:  the destruction of their enemy.  Everything is broadcasted to satellites in orbit, and then transmitted to Rhinterveld.
After a season, an honored Battle Company drops onto the planet, relieving the Initiates and crushing whatever is left of the enemy.  The Memorial is built, honoring the Initiates that have fallen in battle, and commemorating acts of bravery and sacrifice.  The survivors are welcomed back as full battle brothers.
These Campaigns are numbered, and every marine can recall which campaign they attended.  I have heard that Master Vulnar was part of Campaign #157, while Ancient Cassius attended Campaign #94.  The Chapter is currently preparing for Campaign #360.

I have also uncovered that the 3rd Battle Company almost exclusively uses the Mark XII Recon Armor, and only officers and their cadre use the Mark VII Power Armor.  They have no Tactical Dreadnought Armor, Dreadnoughts, or Tanks.  They do maintain a relatively large pool of Landspeeders, and maintain a small motor pool of Rhino APCs and recon bikes.
These marines prefer to fight in jungles and urban areas, where they use guerilla warfare and hit-and-run tactics to wither their enemy down.  They initiate a campaign by establishing a secret base somewhere on-planet, and then stage terror raids, ambushes, and hunter-kills to demoralize the enemy.  Squads often act independently for weeks at a time with little resupplying, which is why they prefer the Recon Armor, which doesn't require a periodic power recharge.  They have also developed a Landspeeder transport, which they call the Gale.  It appears to be an elongated Landspeeder capable of carrying a full ten-man squad.  The Gales negate the necessity of Rhinos, which have been put into a pure support role of transporting supplies between bases of operation.
Landspeeders are called in for fire support, to knock out big vehicles and fortifications.  Occasionally, a Strike Fighter or Thunderhawk is called in to bombard a target before an assault.  The 3rd Company tries to avoid large confrontations, but can easily mass a force anywhere with their Gale Transports.  I have uncovered 3 recorded cases where this has happened, and each time the marines have set-up ambushes and crossfires to destroy their enemy, and used snipers to pin and isolate enemy squads, who are then easy prey to the Landspeeders.  Enemy Armor is usually dealt with by a flanking squad set-up in cover somewhere.  Altogether, the 3rd Company causes confusion in battle and fear throughout the enemy.
The 3rd Company is definitely an unorthodox (and perhaps heretical) company, but have enjoyed much success in their preferred environment.  Perhaps an in-depth investigation would be appropriate.  If my Lord Ryjak wishes, I could secure a place within the Company's Strike Cruiser..
